A Beginner’s Guide to Home Security Systems

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

We lock doors and shut windows or rely on a dog to protect our house and family. But is that enough to ensure safety in such troubling times?

Smart home security will protect your house and family from all kinds of threats. The idea of getting a smart security system that will monitor your home at all times can seem daunting and complicated. Here, we make it easy for you. We give you a low-down on everything you need to know about a smart home security system.

What is a home security system?

Home security systems are a network of smart devices that work together to secure your property. They have a central control unit, smart door locks, window sensors, motion detectors, and indoor/outdoor cameras to protect your home from burglars, fire hazards, and other mishaps.

Home monitoring

All smart home systems come with 24 x 7 monitoring and are directly connected to emergency services dispatch and your phone. You can get a single, smart device for a start and then keep adding more gadgets to build a hub.

Security cameras: Both indoor and outdoor smart cameras are connected to wi-fi and are centrally controlled through a panel or your phone. They have motion sensors to detect people, packages, and more.

Motion sensors: They are usually placed on the main door and the ground floor to alert you in a crisis. Some sensors are sensitive to animals, so they won’t go off when your pets are around. If you have pets, consider this when choosing a sensor.

Glass-break sensor: Thieves prefers the old-fashioned way to sneak in through windows rather than breaking in through doors to prevent setting off door locks and alarms. Installing a glass-break sensor on your window will alert you in case of a break-in.

Smoke detectors: They can detect fires and excess carbon monoxide to ensure optimum indoor air quality.

How do home security systems work?

For most of the systems, all the components are connected to a central base wall mounted station and then to a mobile application, allowing complete remote control. You can arm the security system when leaving the house and disarm it when you are back in. Some systems automatically arm/disarm at a scheduled time set by you.

When your system is armed, motion detectors and sensors will turn on, and cameras will start recording. You can access the live footage, receive notifications, and talk through a two-way audio system right from your mobile. As opposed to manual alarm systems, smart home security lets you control and monitor your house from wherever you are.
