6 Mistakes to Avoid When Installing a CCTV Camera

Updated: May 26, 2021

CCTV surveillance is no longer a luxury. With rising crime rates, it has become a necessity for businesses and households. There are several video surveillance options available for domestic and commercial properties. Using online guides, you can purchase suitable CCTV cameras and install them at home with DIY techniques. However, self-installing a camera system can often lead to performance issues, even with the right equipment.

Here are six mistakes to avoid when installing a security camera:

Incorrect positioning

Security camera position is paramount to recording quality footage. Find vantage points that don’t have obstructions like trees or lighting polls. You must also consider the sun’s position to avoid an intense glare blinding your view during the day. The camera is best positioned under the roof at a downward slope, as it protects it from sunlight and provides an unobstructed view.

Wasting hard drive space

Don’t waste hard drive space by recording twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It is best to pair security cameras with a motion detector to ensure that recording starts when there is a moving object in the vicinity. It will save you time looking through empty recordings and will free up space on your hard drive.

Changing security passwords infrequently

If you have Wi-Fi at your premises, you can quickly view your CCTV camera footage when you are away. However, with advancing technology, these systems are susceptible to hacking.

As a thumb of rule, avoid using your phone number, date of birth, or name as a password, which you must change regularly. To ensure the complete safety of your security system, do not share your password with anyone.

Using fewer cameras

Depending on the size of your premises, you must get an adequate number of CCTV cameras installed. Having one or two cameras for a 3-bedroom apartment will not provide enough coverage to catch the perpetrator in the event of a break-in. For all-around protection, make sure that your cameras cover all entries and exits on your premises.

Not activating alerts

You cannot always sit in front of the monitor to oversee what’s happening around your property. Instead, look for a smart CCTV camera with an alert feature to notify you if anyone tries to break in. The security camera will enable you to inform the police at the earliest so that the potential damage and loss are minimal.

Not hiring professionals

Installing the CCTV camera on your own is the wrong decision. You must hire qualified and skilled technicians for CCTV camera installation since they will bring the necessary knowledge, equipment, and experience to the job.
