4 Smart Devices to Help You Start Your Home Automation Journey
Home automation technology started from the thermostat and has now become a big industry. It allows you to control your home and make it energy efficient through the Internet of Things (IoT). Smart devices make your house convenient and safer.
Here, we give you a low-down on how it works and the devices you can install to make your home smart.
How does home automation work?
It works through a series of devices connected via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-wave, or ZigBee. These devices can be managed remotely through a controller or Alexa or Siri or an app on your phone. Home automation works on three levels — monitoring, control, and automation.
Basic smart home devices
If you are new to home automation and smart home devices, it's good to start small. You can pick up any of the primary products and take it forward from there. All a la carte smart home products can be integrated to your previously installed controller hub and can communicate with other devices. Here we discuss the most basic ones to help you start.
They can do a lot more than play music. They can search the internet for you, play news, work as a personal assistant, and act as a central controlling hub for all other smart home systems. Besides turning off the lights and lowering the thermostat, you can also easily control all your home devices through Siri and Google Home.
You don't need a cable to watch TV anymore. Through Smart TV, you can watch everything you want through online video-streaming devices such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Many smart TVs can be connected to smart speakers and Central Control Hub, making every day living a lot more convenient.
Light automation is available in two options. First, you can install smart switches controlled through an app on your phone, enabling you to switch on/off lights and even dim them. Second, you can get smart light bulbs that offer more lighting options. Smart switches are complicated to install. Meanwhile, smart light bulbs are expensive as they require a translator hub to work with the other home automation devices.
If you want to control your HVAC and save electricity, smart thermostats will be an excellent addition to your home. You can schedule them to switch off after you leave for work. Some thermostats also come with sensors that change the temperature when they sense it's required.
